# domain_taken

> This hostname is in use by another project. This hostname is already attached to another Guv project.

**This hostname is in use by another project.** This hostname is already attached to another Guv project. Guv never lets one account claim a domain another account has verified.

- **HTTP status:** `409 Conflict`
- **CLI exit code:** `2` (the request or file is not valid)
- **Retry:** not as it is; the same request will fail the same way until the cause is fixed

## How to fix it

Prove ownership with a fresh TXT record: _guv-challenge.{hostname} = {token}.

1. If you own the domain, remove it from the other project first, or prove ownership with the TXT record and contact support.

Words in `{braces}` are filled in from the error response, which names the exact resource.

## What the response looks like

```json
{
  "type": "https://guv.dev/errors/domain_taken",
  "title": "This hostname is in use by another project",
  "status": 409,
  "code": "domain_taken",
  "detail": "This hostname is already attached to another Guv project.",
  "fix": "Prove ownership with a fresh TXT record: _guv-challenge.{hostname} = {token}.",
  "docs_url": "https://guv.dev/errors/domain_taken",
  "request_id": "req_01jbx2m9k7q4r8t5v6w3y0z1rq"
}
```

The `code` field is stable: match on it, not on `title` or `detail`, which may be reworded.
