# volume_shrink_not_supported

> Volumes can grow but not shrink. Volumes can only grow.

**Volumes can grow but not shrink.** Volumes can only grow. Shrinking one safely would mean moving every file, so Guv refuses rather than risk data loss.

- **HTTP status:** `422 Unprocessable Content`
- **CLI exit code:** `2` (the request or file is not valid)
- **Retry:** not as it is; the same request will fail the same way until the cause is fixed

## How to fix it

Choose a size of at least {current_size_gb} GB, or create a new, smaller volume and copy the data.

Words in `{braces}` are filled in from the error response, which names the exact resource.

## What the response looks like

```json
{
  "type": "https://guv.dev/errors/volume_shrink_not_supported",
  "title": "Volumes can grow but not shrink",
  "status": 422,
  "code": "volume_shrink_not_supported",
  "detail": "Volumes can only grow.",
  "fix": "Choose a size of at least {current_size_gb} GB, or create a new, smaller volume and copy the data.",
  "docs_url": "https://guv.dev/errors/volume_shrink_not_supported",
  "request_id": "req_01jbx2m9k7q4r8t5v6w3y0z1rq"
}
```

The `code` field is stable: match on it, not on `title` or `detail`, which may be reworded.
